I recently had an onboarding call with a client who was needing some assistance with their social media. They specifically said “I have no idea what I’m doing wrong, every month I premake 20 posts and schedule them to go out every weekday on all of my platforms”, which to some, seems like a super efficient way to do it. I see these business influencers posting on TikTok and Instagram all the time that this is the way to do it, they’re spending a few hours to get their entire social media out of the way for the WHOLE MONTH they don’t have to worry about it at all until next month! AMAZING!... Wrong.
The next thing that came out of their mouth was that no one ever engages with their posts, they’ll get 3 likes on Facebook, 5 on Instagram, 2 on X, and that’s average for them, despite their 10,000+ followers across those platforms.
Now the first thing I thought to myself, if they’re creating 20 posts to go out over the next month in a single afternoon, how much thought and effort are really going into those? They’re saving a lot of time yeah, but I assume they pick 2-3 main topics and then just keep making posts to go to that same theme, using the same pictures they used last month, just with slightly different text and variation.
Put yourself in the shoes of one of your followers, if you heard the same 2-3 messages with the same pictures over and over again, probably the same messages as last month, would that be something you would want to engage with? The answer is probably no, unless you’re the business owner's best friend or mom.
MAKE CONTENT YOUR FOLLOWERS WANT TO SEE
Your followers don’t want to see the same posts of your facility over and over again, just because some social media influencer told you back in 2018 that you need to post 3 times a day to be successful doesn’t mean that’s true anymore. Gone are the days of posting just to post, post when there’s something meaningful for you to post about your business.
The average American sees 4,000-10,000 ads a day (source), what makes you think that your shitty post on Facebook is going to make them actually want to stop and read it? Our brains are programmed to tune things out that automatically seem like ads, and yes your shitty posts that you bulk made 20 of last month seem like ads.
IT’S NOT THE ALGORITHMS FAULT
Everyone loves to blame the algorithm when their posts don’t do well, that’s the easy cop out to take the blame off yourself that you’re making shitty content that no one wants to see. The algorithm is always changing, and I will admit it is hard to keep up with, but throughout all of the changes that the algorithms might make on all the different platforms, it’s ultimate goal is to show users content that they think they will like so then they will stay scrolling on their platform longer because that’s the way these platforms make their money through ad views.
If your followers are seeing your post and not engaging with it or skipping right past, the algorithm is going to see that as them not liking your content, which means they’re not going to go out of their way to show it to more people, because they’re afraid that a user will see your content, get so outraged by your shitty content that they close the app and now neither of you make money.
WHEN YOU SHOULD POST
When you have something meaningful to post about that aligns with your brand, your message, and your followers would actually like to engage with. Take the time you were going to spend creating 3 posts a day for 7 days, and put that into say 1-2 high quality posts a week. Try this out for a month and I can guarantee you will see results, more people will engage with your contents, likes will come back, and you will see your accounts grow.
I would give specific examples here, but I know that some of you would take that too literally and copy my examples word for word, where that’s not the case, every one of your businesses are unique, you have a different brand message, followers have different interests, and ultimately different goals in business.
When doing any marketing you need to go back and look to who your target demographic is with these posts, and what do they want to hear? That’s who you need to make meaningful content for. If you don’t know who your target demographic is and what they want to hear, take a step back and invest some time into figure that out before you waste anymore time and money marketing to the wrong people.
